What is somatic therapy?

Somatic therapy is an approach that integrates the principles of somatics, which involves the connection between the mind and body. It recognizes the interconnectedness of physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts, aiming to enhance overall well-being and personal development.

In somatic coaching, the focus is not solely on verbal communication or intellectual understanding but also on bodily sensations and experiences. Individuals explore and understand the way emotions manifest physically in the body, working towards improved self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience.

This approach often involves various techniques and practices to address physical sensations and movements, breathing patterns, and posture. By incorporating these elements, somatic coaching seeks to facilitate positive changes in behavior, mindset, and overall life satisfaction. It can be particularly beneficial for those looking to navigate challenges, manage stress, build resilience, and deepen their connection with themselves and others.

What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine for addressing and healing trauma. The central concept of Somatic Experiencing is rooted in the understanding that trauma can become trapped in the body, leading to various physical and emotional symptoms. The approach focuses on renegotiating and releasing this trapped energy through attention to bodily sensations and the natural, instinctual responses of the nervous system.

In Somatic Experiencing sessions, the individual is guided to explore sensations in the body related to traumatic experiences. The therapist helps the person pay attention to their physiological responses, encouraging the release of tension and promoting the body's natural ability to self-regulate. The goal is to prevent the overwhelming and freezing responses associated with trauma, allowing the individual to complete the instinctual fight, flight, or freeze responses that may have been interrupted during the traumatic event.

Somatic Experiencing is often used to address a range of trauma-related conditions, including but not limited to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and chronic stress. This approach is holistic, acknowledging the interconnectedness of mind and body in the healing process.
